The Sound of Music - dive into the world of the Von Trapp family and be enchanted by the music!
The classic film The Sound of Music has largely contributed to the notoriety of Salzburg world over. Especially in the United States and in other English-speaking countries, the history of Maria Trapp has had an enormous resonance.
Millions of people have travelled to Salzburg over the last decades in order to visit the charming places where the film was shot. By booking a Sound of Music tour, enthusiasts are guaranteed not to miss any sites where the film was shot. Probably the most famous scene of the movie was shot in a pavilion constructed specifically for the movie. Many scenes were also shot in the Mirabellgarten (Mirabel Garden) and dramatic moments took place in St. Peter’s cemetery where the family was hidden from the Nazis. Another unforgettable scene is Baron singing "Edelweiß" the secret hymn of the Fangemeinde in front of the impressive stage of the Felsenreitschule.
In real life, Maria and the Baron stood in front of the wedding altar of the Nonnberg closter. Director Robert Wise made use Hollywood set reproductions and staged a fairy-tale wedding for protagonist Julie Andrews at the Stift Mondsee. Despite being barely regarded in Austria, it was incredibly successful in the US and won as much recognition as "Gone with the Wind”. Apparently, the Austrian public was confused about factual discrepancies such as the Baron residing in two castles simultaneously, or that the family escaped over the Untersberg mountain even though Hitler was lurking at the Obersalzberg. The Trapp family itself never returned to the Salzach after their emigration in 1938. Six of the ten children are still alive, most of them in their new home country, the United States of America.
