Fun Stuff - The funniests mistakes of the movie

Salzburg – it is the city of the Festival, the Mozart ball and the rather annoying sudden downpours. For the American visitor, however, Salzburg is virtually synonymous with “The Sound of Music”.

Against this backdrop we ask ourselves: wherein lies the secret of a film that overseas is mentioned in the same breath as “Gone with the Wind” or “Terminator,” while hardly anyone in Austria actually knows about it. Poor numbers at the box office and bad reviews led to the Hollywood movie’s speedy disappearance into the archives. It might be partially explained by the fact that to the trained eye some directing errors cannot remain hidden.

For example, Hollywood made Baron von Trapp concurrently the owner of castle Leopoldskron and castle Frohnburg, essentially selling the unsuspecting audiences both parcels of real estate as one and the same location.

Moreover, the Trapp family would have had to be rather naïve to attempt its escape via the Untersberg, considering that they would have ended up smack in the middle of a Hitler controlled Obersalzberg.

Just as correct are viewers who note that the Trapp children appear larger at the beginning of the film than toward the end. Due to the frustrating sudden downpours, the film crew had to produce the initial scenes of the movie at the conclusion of the work.

Attempts at reconciliation are also marred by the backdrop which paints an Austria that is far too idyllic to be real, and which is underscored with Broadway show tunes.  Hollywood created itself a Salzburg to fit its need for a backdrop to make a homeland film that allows Americans to feel at home, and thus it is the feeling of decades old homesickness that grips them. Far more than half of USA tourists travel to Salzburg just because of “The Sound of Music,” follow along with “The Sound of Music” tours, and remain at home in the evening in front of the television screens where Maria and the children act in a continuous loop.

The Trapp tourists at the Salzach River risk succumbing to one or more mistakes. For example, the song “Edelweiß” is not Austria’s national anthem. Moreover, the Landler is not an Austrian folk dance, and there are no “crisp apple strudels” on the menus of Salzburg’s restaurants, such as the song “My favorite things” suggests.
